In the early and mid 2010s we were introduced to a new sound, “Bedroom Pop”. Identified by somber melodies mixed with soft vocals, minimal production, and still very catchy lyrics. The sound has had a resurgence as of late, mainly due to female artists such as Billy Eilish, but as with every genre there’s been a lot of experimentation. People speculate that we are heading towards genreless music, but I think the opposite.
Yvungjake and his new single “Stuck In My Head” is a prime example of why I feel this way.
Music is getting more and more niche, with so much variety nowadays a lot of listeners are
gravitating towards specificity. You can hear the influences, but that’s the whole point, If they can successfully make it their own at least. Yvungjake does an excellent job of doing just that from conception to execution. Creating a self reflective and emotional track that still has mass appeal.
The lyrics are admittedly depressing but the delivery and overall production are hopeful. As if
he’s confronting his truth but not being trapped by it. With emotional vocal runs, beautiful chord progressions, and a still upbeat tempo, the song succeeds in tugging at every nerve. You hear the rock influences, and you get the rock lyrics, but the beat is mainly soft pop, resulting in a whirlpool of a song.
Now’s the time where I drop the bomb that this artist is only 13. The song was impressive
enough on its own merit, but I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t a big reason for this article. This is the future of music. Artists are getting started younger and younger. All equipped with more tools to do so. All pulling from an ever expanding library of music for inspiration. All fueled by different factors but share one end goal. Creating a breeding ground for innovation and competition.
It seems overwhelming, but if you love it then that’s all that matters. Making it in this industry
takes an immense amount of luck, but creating a piece of art you believe in only takes some
hard work. And once you do that, hey, who knows.
My point is that we are entering a new age and it should be celebrated. If a 13 year old boy with no proper training can make a song like this in his bedroom then the possibilities are endless. Nothings set in stone, but Yvungjake has an incredibly bright future, check him out on any platform and his new song “Stuck In My Head” exclusively on YouTube.
