In past articles I’ve written about “genreless music” and how we’re really heading towards the opposite, with very specific and niché genres. Due to the rapid evolution of technology artists no longer need to work to find a good studio or even producer. They can make their own studio, they can make their own beats, they can record themselves, and they can even mix and master it all on their own. This change in the industry broke down barriers but also created more competition. Artists must do their best to stand out now more than ever, and they mustn’t be afraid to take risks.
We still get the imposters who try to sound like whatever’s the hottest at that moment but that’s no longer the norm. Now we have artists creating entire new sub genres, still staying up on trends but seeing how they can put their own twist on them rather than ride the wave. 20 year old New York artist T Lav is a sterling example of an artist turned mad scientist. His newest song “You” is a Frankenstein’s monster’ piece of music, and I mean that in the best way possible.
With a beat and hook most reminiscent of hyper pop, T Lav brings a unique approach by
blending traditional rap flows and gut wrenching melodies. Trippie Redd and Juice WRLD have similar tracks but T Lav really sets himself apart, leaning into each element with full force. The mix does some very interesting switch ups at points and the beat is no exception. It’s honestly hard to put into words, let’s just say Circus Olay is jealous of this juggling act. Check out T Lav’s “You” out everywhere now for a glimpse of the future.
