One of the biggest music trends that’s currently experiencing a huge resurgence in popularity is Jersey club. What was once originally an electronic club style of music from Newark, New Jersey, can now be seen across the globe. Artists such as Lil Uzi Vert, Wolfacejoeyy, and Kanii are just some of the examples that are bringing out the “Jersey” stylistic to music. And while artists are having their fun with it, producers can be seen adding their own spin to this genre, especially through remixing samples and popular memes. When you go on TikTok and search “#jerseyclub”, there will always be a video showing a screen recording of a Jersey club sound project, whether it’s FL Studio, Garageband, or even apps such as BandLab. Recently, a new creator has been dominating this hashtag with his experimentation of Jersey club, and his story of his TikTok come up is one hell of a journey told through several years of hard work and attempting new skills.
Originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Shonci is currently residing in Canada as a content creator and marketing specialist. He has been making content as early as 12 years old, using YouTube as his go to platform. Now, he’s transitioning to other outlets, one of which is TikTok. Prior to his Jersey club videos, he would upload other popular content such as 4 hour sleeping videos where in the middle, he would troll the viewers by adding loud noises. Other popular TikToks of his include skiing vlogs gone wrong, racing marbles, and buying replica dogs for $1. It seems like regardless of the trend or idea, Shonci has always found a way to stay on top of what’s hot and be at the forefront of TikTok’s explore page, dating back to 2019 when he first started. Now, he’s dominating the Jersey club scene on the app with his hilarious and entertaining videos sampling mainstream songs and even shows, with his recent hit “I am a SURGEON: Jersey Remix”, which samples a portion of the medical drama, “The Good Doctor”. In the following interview, Shonci shares his story of his growth as a content creator, as well as how he came about creating Jersey club beats.
How did you first get into TikTok? Shonci: I started using TikTok back in 2019 since it was blowing up and at first I made a few Tiktoks that other people were doing (those trendy ones). I realised how boring that was for me and started to just do whatever made me and my friends laugh. Turns out people loved it and I made several hits like my skiing vlogs and racing marble videos. What made you come up with the bizarre, yet hilarious sleeping videos? Shonci: I had a thing for trolling people with TikToks and videos for a while. I would add random videos during tutorials and asmr videos to fuck with people. Then one day I just had a random idea to add gunshots to wake people up and that just went viral everywhere. When and why did you start making beats? Shonci: Ever since I was young, I was always on SoundCloud following them rappers. I went through all different phases of cloud rap, hyperpop, trap goth, glitchcore, etc... I decided to try rapping in 2017 and made some cool songs but I was never confident to release. I have over 100 unreleased songs. Then I started to make mixes of songs in 2021 that I liked and only recently I started to learn how to make beats.
