“Control” EP Review

Drake. I wanted to get that out of the way because you can’t write an article about a Canadian artist without mentioning him. He’s earned that, he is the king after all...but every reign must come to an end eventually.
JORKE is a 23 year old artist from a small town outside of the greater Toronto
Area : Bowmanville, Ontario. He raps in his songs but adds so much more that it’d be
disrespectful to classify him as a rapper. JORKE pairs great voice control with an impeccable
flow. Often switching from hitting notes in a beautiful melody to firing off clever bars at a rapid pace. Flexing all of this talent over carefully selected beats that make it impossible to sit still.
Track 1 “Wasted” is one of his more cooled down approaches but it still brings the energy.
Creating a specific vibe that builds to an explosion of bars with forty five seconds left. It’s a
vulnerable song that pulls at the heart strings but never feels sappy as his self confidence is
spewing through your headphones all throughout.
Track 2 “Control” picks up the pace and is the whole reason for this article. I was originally only supposed to talk about this one but the project was just too good, don’t let that take away from the song though, it’s still my favorite. Using a very unique beat that incorporates horns, a guitar, and key instruments, JORKE robs your attention with the opening and keeps it throughout; dancing all over the song words.
Track 3 “Get To Movin’” is a great outro that combines the two latter approaches. Bringing a
sense of closure to a three song EP. All the songs could have sounded the same and it still
would’ve been great but JORKE flexes his versatility and impressive ear for music.
Pulling from inspirations like Young Thug, 6LACK, T pain, and Tory Lanez you can see where
that versatility comes from and you can hear each but JORKE manages to create a truly unique sound that stands on its own from any other. When I spoke to him he said his main goal for now was to just cultivate a fanbase in his home country and spread the message for more people to take chances and bet on themselves. He’s just a small town kid who managed to sell out shows in that town and wants to build on his success not only for himself but to help other artists achieve their dreams. Possessing this much talent and grace is a breath of fresh air and makes it hard not to root for the guy. Being young and full of passion, I personally can’t wait to see where he goes from here.
