Joshua Blu “Heartbreaker” Song Spotlight

Written By Stacy James (@stacyjamesofficial)

Music is an ever evolving entity and thus so is every genre that lives within it. No matter how

basic or imitation-filled you may believe one genre to be, the reality is that they are all

composed of amazing artists who inspire each other with experimentation. As you’re reading

this someone out there is creating a new sound, maybe similar to something you’ve heard

before but new nonetheless. However, the chances of you hearing it are minimal.

In this industry it all boils down to what’s popular. Corporations and consumers living in a

symbiotic relationship where they somehow both think they know what’s best. I say all this not to confuse you but to shine a light on the ever so confusing genre of Pop. Originally it was just that, whatever was popular at the time. But once those meddling studios heard what the kids loved it was off to the races to duplicate the success. Through all this chaos a new genre was born.

Something doesn’t have to be necessarily popular to be pop music, but it does have to have

mass appeal, it has to be marketable. Coming from a family of musicians and artists, 27 year old Connecticut artist Joshua Blu knows all about this and his song “Heartbreaker” is the perfect encapsulation of modern pop music. An impeccably produced track that has an upbeat tempo but isn’t afraid to be unhappy. The closest comparison would be The Weeknd but that’s a disservice to both artists.

Joshua Blu confronts his personal demons in an intimate confrontation with Cupid. Pouring out his heart and soul without compromising his technical ability, which includes exemplary voice control and vocal range that he’s more than happy to show off. With lyrics that include nods to classic songs and a relatable vulnerability, you can really see the pop element.

Even with all of this said the song never feels like a sellout and maintains an alternative/indie

feel throughout, resulting in a truly unique experience. The negative emotions never pull you

down either, rather the song as a whole lifts you up and warms your heart. Checkout Joshua

Blu’s song “Heartbreaker” out every now and be on the lookout for his next take on pop.
