I’ve recently written about how wordsmiths seemingly lost their place in rap, key word
“seemingly”. Sure, the days where rappers were rated solely for lyrical ability and crowd control are long gone, but that doesn’t mean the old heads are right. It’s not “all rap” and it’s not even just what’s popular anymore. With the help of streaming artists can now build their fanbase more organically and focus on their core sound. This allows for an entire spectrum of rappers to be able to have great album sales at once. Yes we still have mumble rappers but we also still have true emcees and everything in-between.
19 year old Chicago artist OkDeazy possesses immense lyrical ability but isn’t handcuffed by it. “Hate Me Now” has a crunk like opening before gradually building to an explosion of bars. Smoothing it all over with a buttery yet still sporadic flow. It’s admittedly simple in concept but that doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. It’s all one big pat on the back, featuring a hook saying “nobody fuckin’ wit Deazy” and it’s hard to argue.
With impeccable and seamless execution the track doesn’t give you a chance to question the subject matter, you’re too busy feeling the song and eventually yourself. Equipped with an infectious confidence and unafraid to show his personality, OkDeazy ropes you in and the reins don’t loosen until the song is over. Accompanied with punchy and colorful visuals, the video keeps you glued to your screen and you’re bound to replay it once or twice. With inspirations like Kanye West, Juice WRLD, and Lil Uzi Vert, I’d love to see what this lyrical mastermind has planned next. Checkout the music video for OkDeazy’s track “Hate Me Now” right here.
