With just over 100,000 subscribers and more than 17,000,000 total YouTube views, the Arizona based video production company Overcast officially announced its retirement. On October 10th 2022 the team released their official goodbye statement to Instagram where they expressed ,
“Overcast started on the basis of putting underground artists on in a unique, creative and visual way. After the first 2 years we realized it was going to be bigger than that. We were able to captivate a loving community and audience while working with some of the best up-coming artists, we sold out our first show, formed friendships, and hopefully helped some people get through tough times. However the past few months have been tough. With internal creative differences and lack of energy for what once was, we have decided to end the Overcast project. We lost the spark we once had and it’s time for everyone at Overcast to move onto new beginnings. We’ve spent a lot of time thinking and working on how to proceed and have concluded with archiving its legacy instead of letting the ship slowly sink. This is no easy decision, but we can all agree that it’s for the best. Thank you all for 100K subscribers on YouTube, it’s been a milestone we’ve been chasing for 4 years, and thanks to all of you it’s a reality. You guys changed our lives and allowed us to do what we love for so long. And thank you friends and supporters, ones who stuck with us since day one and ones who will continue to follow along in the near future “
It’s safe to say that over the past couple years, the production crew has solidified themselves as a staple in the underground music scene becoming the go-to team for up and coming artists to have their work shown to a larger audience. Overcast was often referred to as the “Next Lyrical Lemonade” but in my eyes and the eyes of many people they were simply the first Overcast. With their complex edits, innovative elements, and their prolific vision, they have brought something so unique to the underground music scene. When I first discovered Overcast in 2019 through the video “Dropout” by Brakence, I was beyond impressed. Although music videos are nothing state-of-the-art, there was something so special about this particular team. Overcast brought creatives together and played a major role in getting them to the forefront of the industry.
This generation's underground music scene needed an outlet for their music, and I couldn't think of a more perfect group to create one. It hurts seeing something so strong and pure end so quickly when it seemed like the sky was the limit for Overcast. With all that being said, you might ask, “What's next for the underground?” Although this is a big change, with other media teams such as SoulSerum and OneTrackMind, I believe this generation's underground scene won't be going anywhere and will continue to change music forever. The ball is now in anyone's court.
